Link 101 Project Halted, Alternatives Proposed

INDOT has halted the $200 million Link 101 Corridor Project due to financial concerns and significant opposition from the public.

This project aimed to enhance connectivity in southeastern Indiana by constructing a new state road, 101, between U.S. 50 and the Markland Dam Bridge on the Ohio River. However, after a thorough evaluation of alternative options, INDOT determined that the project's costs had escalated well beyond the initial estimate to over $450 million, primarily due to rising construction expenses and challenging terrain.

The project’s cancellation was welcomed by opponents, including Republican gubernatorial candidate Jamie Reitenour, who highlighted concerns about the impact on the local community and the acquisition of property through eminent domain. “That highway was targeting a rich area of Indiana land, taking over generational farms and homesteads,” Reitenour said.

Two alternative options haven now been proposed, aiming to minimize the project's impact on the rural landscape while still addressing transportation needs. These alternatives involve either utilizing existing roadways with rehabilitation measures or expanding existing state highways without constructing new roads.
